Smokers’ Helpline is a free, confidential service operated by the Canadian Cancer Society offering support and information about quitting smoking and tobacco use.

Get access to information, tools, and exercises to help you quit and stay quit, and join our online support community to share your experiences. You can also receive support on the go with text messages customized to your quit date. Text IQUIT to the number 123456 to register or sign-up online.   • Build Smoke Free

    Build Smoke Free

    EllisDon, in partnership with the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) and Ottawa Public Health (OPH) has launched Build Smoke-Free, a way to connect construction workers who are ready to quit smoking with free resources and information to increase their chances of quitting successfully. 

  • Program Overview

    Build Smoke-Free (BSF) was developed by the CCS, in collaboration with EllisDon and Ottawa Public Health. Also involved is the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health who is facilitating access to nicotine replacement therapy to participants, while Ontario Tobacco Research Unit (University of Toronto) is the research & evaluation partner. BSF is receiving partial funding from Public Health Agency of Canada to scale up in Ontario and into two other provinces over the next three years. 

    BSF is an expansion of a successful model built by OPH, which was funded by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care in 2013-14 as one of 13 demonstration projects at the time. A needs assessment conducted as part of the OPH pilot and BSF incorporates many of the original program components including fostering champions on worksites, tailoring the program to suit the work site, addressing stress as a leading cause of relapse, and increasing availability of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) to support cessation.

    Core to the program is a contest that all workers can take part it in to create an environment that is more supportive for those who are trying to quit smoking. 

    “Having both tobacco users and non-users get involved is the best way to make a culture shift towards smoke-free work sites” states CCS Senior Manager, Katina Kominos.

    Overall, BSF aims to: ​

    • Increase attempts to quit smoking
    • Increase access to evidence-based cessation supports by making NRT, Quit Line services and self-help resources readily available​
    • Build social and physical work environments that support tobacco cessation

  • How BSF Works
    • Workers can sign up to participate in the contest in one of three categories:
      • Quitter: Quit smoking for one month
      • Quit Buddy: Help someone quit smoking
      • Smoke-Free Supporter: Stay smoke-free during contest period
    • BSF provides tobacco users with a range of cessation tools and information to make a successful quit attempt. Examples include:
      • The distribution of up to 10 weeks of free nicotine replacement therapy, an evidence-based cessation tool proven to double the chances of successful quit attempts  
      • An automatic referral to Smokers’Helpline 
      • Weekly on-site visits to share cessation tools and information and build Skillpower to quit. 
      • Distribution of self-help resources 
      • Brief cessation counselling in conjunction with carbon monoxide testing at each of the weekly on-site visits. 
      • Follow-up calls with quitters to ensure that tobacco users are getting the resources they need

    • The intervention cycle is completed after winners are confirmed in each of the contest categories

    • Program elements, such as the weekly information booster sessions, are delivered in a positive way to make this quit smoking challenge enjoyable. A bit of humour also helps – such as t-shirts given to tobacco users to warn their co-workers if they are making a quitting attempt (as seen in figure 1).

    Build Smoke-Free is currently being delivered in six EllisDon sites across Ontario, with plans to expand to Alberta in 2020.

  • Success Stories & Testimonials

    Pictured to the left is Dimas Pacheco, Spring 2019 contest winner at The Well. Dimas used the BSF contest as an opportunity and incentive to crush his 2 pack a day addiction. What an accomplishment!

    After significantly reducing his tobacco consumption using the various cessation supports provided by BSF, including the NRT patch, Mike (pictured to the left) said "I feel a lot better! I’ve cut out everything else and I’m now a vegan, and this is the last thing I need to do to live better"

    Pictured to the left is BSF participant, Andy Leo, who signed up to quit smoking. BSF staff deliver CO monitor testing on-site to increase worker's awareness regarding the health effects of tobacco use, as well as to motivate and encourage tobacco users to quit smoking. Andy said "that number really messed with me" regarding his high CO level reading.  By the 3rd week of the program Andy had reduced his tobacco consumption from 1.5 packs of cigarettes per day to 4 cigarettes a day and is committed to reduce until fully smoke-free! 
    "Momentum was there and I wanted to go with the flow" said Bruce Demers, Spring 2019 Quit category winner at the Carling site.
  • Program Successes

    BSF got off to an amazing start at the Toronto and Ottawa sites thanks to our great team of partners’, staff and sponsors but especially EllisDon staff who paved the way for us to bring this innovative, health promoting program to their workers.  

    Throughout this entire journey, CCS has developed and maintained a strong working relationship with EllisDon. Health, Safety and Environment Coordinator and Foremen have been extremely welcoming and supportive of program staff. "They are essential for building positive and supportive environments for construction workers wanting to make a quit attempt and stay smoke-free" states Heidi McKean, RN. "They make it possible for us to bring information and resources to workers at job sites so we absolutely couldn't do this without them." 

    Health, Safety and Environment Coordinator, said "Our experience with the Build Smoke-Free program has been exceptionally valuable. We were not aware of how many construction workers are using commercial tobacco products and are interested in quitting. We were pleased to see the progress the Build smoke free team was able to make on our project. Their incredibly positive and supportive approach was essential to the great relationships they were able to develop during their time here." The BSF team looks forward to continuing to work with EllisDon to achieve their shared goal of building a smoke-free culture on construction sites. 

    As of September 30th 2019, BSF has been successful in supporting over 152 tobacco users across Ontario in their journey to quit smoking. The BSF team is looking forward to expanding the program to Alberta in 2020 and continuing to increase access to cessation supports for individuals that are ready to make an attempt to quit smoking.
