Day in the life of a social media content specialist

Working with us provides a unique opportunity to improve the lives of Canadians. A collective of people united by the same goals, we’re working together to transform the future of cancer forever. Because it takes a society to take on cancer.

Emma: Here is a day in my life as a social media content specialist at the Canadian Cancer Society.

[The narrator, Emma, appears on screen. She opens her bedroom curtains. A coffee machine brews coffee into a cup. Emma raises the cup of coffee into the air outside.]

Emma: Today I was going to the office, so I got ready and headed to work.

[Emma turns on the shower, blow dries her hair, rides the subway and walks on a crowded city street.]

Emma: Normally I start my workday by checking in with my coworkers and responding to emails. Then it was time to plan out what I wanted to get done for the day.

[Emma arrives at her desk, hangs her jacket on her chair and unpacks her laptop and notebook from her bag. She checks her emails on the computer.]

Emma: One thing about me is that I am totally lost without my notebook. I write out my to-do list every single day. So, I did that and then it was time to get started.

[Emma writes a to-do list in her notebook while referencing her computer.]

Emma: Something I love about my position on the Social Media team is that every day is different.

[People sit at a long desk in a boardroom. They watch a presentation on a screen mounted on the wall.]

Emma: This morning, I had a meeting to brainstorm new content ideas for our social media channels.

[Emma types on her laptop. She’s wearing a yellow Daffodil pin.]

Emma: This meeting is always a lot of fun because I get to hear everyone's ideas and I always leave feeling super inspired.

[People sit in the board room with their laptops in front of them while Emma listens and nods.]

Emma: After my meeting, it was time to grab a quick coffee and a coworker brought some lemon loaf to the office, so I had to try a bite of that as well.

[Emma holds a cup of coffee and a slice of lemon loaf on a plate.]

Emma: After that, I started editing a video for our social channels.

[Emma sits at her desk, puts in her headphones and edits a video on her computer.]

Emma: Creating videos to promote our programs, services and share the stories of people impacted by cancer is a big part of my job and I love the creativity that comes with it.

[Emma sips on water and coffee while editing the video on her computer.]

Emma: By then it was lunchtime, so my coworker and I decided to try a new sandwich spot across the street, and it was delicious.

[A person rides a motorbike on a busy street. A mural on a building wall is shown. Emma’s manager opens the door to a sandwich shop and taps her smartphone to pay at the register. A sandwich is shown.]

Emma: In the afternoon, I was filming a streeters video where you interview people on the street. Today, we were asking people about the cost of cancer care in Canada.

[An intersection busy with cars and pedestrians is shown. Emma interviews people on the street. A man types on a smartphone.

Emma: We interviewed a bunch of people and then it was time to head back to the office.

[An outdoor planter of daffodils is shown. Emma scans her office key card and opens the doors to the Canadian Cancer Society office. In the front entrance, there’s a big black wall sign with “It Takes a Society” in yellow font.]

Emma: When I got back, a staff event was happening for Daffodil Month so I popped in and chatted with some of my coworkers. It was really nice.

[The Canadian Cancer Society office lunchroom is shown. It’s full of people and the kitchen counter is covered with yellow snacks.]

Emma: Next up was a filmed interview with someone living with cancer.

[Emma arranges a chair in a yellow room and shows a thank you card next to a daffodil pin. A Canadian Cancer Society logo on the yellow wall is shown.]

Emma: They were coming to our office, so I set up for that and then we sat down and chatted about their cancer experience.

[A woman wearing a daffodil pin sits in a chair and talks into a microphone.]

Emma: I finished off my day by checking in on our TikTok account. Then my day was done, and it was time for me to head home and relax.

[Emma works on her computer. She waves at the “It Takes a Society” sign in the foyer of the Canadian Cancer Society office. She presses an elevator button, then shows an open book and cup of tea on a fuzzy blanket.]

[The Canadian Cancer Society logo and wordmark appear on a yellow background.]
