Breaking win: Taking back power over big tobacco

funding the best cancer researchTobacco use is the leading cause of preventable disease and death in Canada. By introducing comprehensive plain packaging, Canada is implementing a significant measure to reduce tobacco use and save lives – and YOU helped make it happen!

“Canada’s plain packaging regulations are now the best and most comprehensive in the world,” says CCS Senior Policy Analyst Rob Cunningham. “Tobacco plain packaging will help protect kids, prevent cancer and save lives.”

Since the 1990s, with the backing of our dedicated donors, the Canadian Cancer Society has been advocating for tobacco plain packaging regulations. On May 1 this year, Canada positioned itself as a global leader by announcing newly-strengthened national regulations, setting the most effective tobacco plain packaging requirements in the world.

The historic policy enhancements, which apply to all tobacco products, include:

  • Implementing plain packaging: prohibiting brand colours, graphics and logos on packages, and requiring a drab brown colour as the base colour for all brands
  • Banning slim, superslim and extended length cigarettes, as well as “purse packs", which target women and girls
  • Prohibiting branding or promotion on the cigarettes themselves
  • Requiring cigarette packages to be in a standardized slide and shell format, increasing warning size to the largest health warnings on cigarette packages in the world in surface area.

Tobacco use is the leading cause of lung cancer and kills more than 45,000 Canadians annually. The Canadian government has committed to reducing tobacco use among Canadians to less than 5% by 2035 – and YOU are helping ensure this lifesaving goal is well within reach.
