Canadian Cancer Society wants to help you prevent cancer

Toronto -

Imagine a world with less cancer. Impossible? Not at all. Research shows that about half of all cancers can be prevented, and the Canadian Cancer Society wants to help Canadians make that a reality. Today the Society released an interactive online cancer-prevention tool – called It’s My Life! – to help people reduce their risk of cancer. It is the first Canadian tool of its kind.

A recent study conducted by Society-funded researcher Dr Carolyn Gotay highlighted the need for innovative online tools to better spread awareness about cancer prevention. “We know that Canadians turn to the Internet to learn about health,” says Dr Gotay, Director, Cancer Prevention Centre, a partnership between the Canadian Cancer Society and the University of British Columbia. “This interactive online tool provides reliable, evidence-based information about cancer risks and how to reduce them.”

Most Canadians are unable to identify risk factors linked to cancer. Only half of Canadians knew that eating vegetables and fruit is one way to reduce cancer risk and only about one-third identified alcohol, extra body weight and not enough physical activity as cancer risk factors.

It’s My Life! – an interactive cancer-prevention tool released by the Society today.

Visitors to It’s My Life! answer questions about their lifestyle, and the tool gives them tailored cancer-prevention information and tips. At the end, users are encouraged to pledge lifestyle changes and to share their pledges on social media.

“There is a lot of cancer information online, but not all of it is credible,” says Dr Prithwish De, an epidemiologist at the Canadian Cancer Society. “It’s My Life! provides evidence-based information about various risk factors and cancer prevention in one convenient place. It is supported by the most recent Canadian statistics about cancer and health behaviour, making it the first Canadian tool of its kind.”

It’s My Life! can be used as a health promotion tool by educators, clinicians and health organizations to inform and encourage Canadians to take action to reduce their cancer risk.

The development of the interactive online cancer prevention tool “It’s My Life!” was partially supported by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).
