Boosting fat cells to improve leukemia treatment

Leukemia is a form of cancer that develops from blood stem cells. People with leukemia often can’t make enough healthy blood cells. This can lead to infections and other serious complications. Dr Mick Bhatia and his team uncovered a surprising cause underlying this problem – changes in nearby fat cells. They also uniquely used a type of drug meant for diabetes that can simultaneously put the brakes on leukemia cells and boost normal blood cell development. This “double duty” treatment could lead to a new therapy to improve overall health outcomes for people with aggressive blood cancers.
