A random act of kindness during one of the most vulnerable times in someone’s life can be powerful.
Paulette Hicks has been affected by cancer in her family and work circles – as most everyone has. She has seen firsthand the impact on people with cancer and their families.
So the cancer cause is important to Paulette, and as general manager of the Delta Brunswick and Brunswick Square Complex in Saint John, New Brunswick, she has made it both a personal and corporate priority. For the past 4 years, the Delta Brunswick, under Paulette’s leadership, has been a corporate partner of the Canadian Cancer Society, donating a total of nearly $40,000.
“I never underestimate the possibility that cancer may be in my future,” says Paulette. “It is happening all around us – friends, co-workers, community leaders, guests, youth, seniors, aunts and uncles. I have been inspired by so many cancer patients. They are brave and courageous, and they all teach us so much. We must refuse to fail. We can’t give up. This is an investment for life.”
Paulette, born and raised in Pennfield, New Brunswick, has worked at the Delta Brunswick, a 4-star convention hotel, for the past 21 years. She first began partnering with the Canadian Cancer Society in 2012, when she became a member of the Relay For Life Dream Team. She continued as a Dream Team member in 2013. In 2014, Delta Brunswick donated more than $13,000 to the Society. The majority of the funds have been raised through a special rate created specifically for the Canadian Cancer Society. For every customer who books through the Check in for the Cure promotion, the hotel donates 10%. The rate continues to be available in 2016.
The Delta Brunswick also assists people with cancer in New Brunswick in other ways. It co-founded the Delta Oasis program in partnership with Atlantic Health Sciences Corporation, offering complimentary accommodation for one night, meals and valet parking for breast surgery patients who travel from outside the Saint John region.
“Check in for the Cure and the Delta Oasis program have allowed us to personally connect with our special guests and their families. They have allowed a strong culture of kindness to be fostered in the Delta Brunswick,” says Paulette.
“A random act of kindness from a stranger during one of the most vulnerable times in someone’s life can be powerful. I have personally been inspired and moved by each special note we receive from survivors and their families after they have stayed with us. It is the best part of my job!”Donate now
