Reducing your risk for renal pelvis and ureter cancer
You may lower your risk of developing renal pelvis and ureter cancer by doing the following.
Be a non-smoker
Smoking is the most significant risk factor for renal pelvis and ureter cancer.
Avoid herbal products with aristolochic acids
Aristolochic acids can cause kidney damage and increase the risk for cancer of the renal pelvis or ureter. Use only herbal products that have been approved by Health Canada. If you aren’t sure, don’t take the product.
Avoid or lower your exposure to cancer-causing substances
Researchers are trying to find out if the many chemicals and occupational exposures that increase the risk for bladder cancer also increase the risk for renal pelvis and ureter cancer. To be safe, follow safety rules when you work with chemicals. Ask your employer for information about and protective equipment for working with hazardous materials. If needed, take steps to lower high levels of arsenic in your drinking water.
