Dr David Hammond

Dr David Hammond has made a remarkable impact for a scientist at such an early stage in his career. He has become an internationally recognized expert in the area of tobacco control, serving as an advisor for tobacco control policies and guidelines in Canada and around the world. He has also served as an expert witness in legal challenges brought by tobacco companies against public health laws in Canada, the UK and Australia.
Dr Hammond’s principal research interests are warning labels and tobacco control. He has designed and carried out studies which investigate the impact of health warnings on cigarette packages and how governments can design more effective messages. smokers perceive and are affected by warning labels on cigarette packaging. The rigour of this research and impact of its findings has established him as an expert in the international policy arena. He has also led studies on cigarette package design and exposure levels among smokers to help countries develop more effective health warnings.
Dr Hammond holds a PhD in Psychology and is an Associate Professor in the School of Public Health and Health Systems at the University of Waterloo.
Just a decade after completing graduate school, Dr Hammond has accumulated an exceptional publication record with over 130 publications to his record. His key contributions to the literature include a first-authored article in the Lancet and several reports for the US Surgeon General and the Internationl Agency for Research in Cancer. He is recognized as a superb mentor, a personable colleague, and a tireless collaborator. He is also known as an effective and enthusiastic science communicator, with a talent for making research findings accessible and clear.
