Halifax -

A Canadian Cancer Society volunteer who founded Katrin’s Karepackage, a program to help cancer patients cover costs associated with treatments, has been named a Rhodes Scholar. Maike Van Niekerk, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing student at Dalhousie University, is one of 11 students from Canada to receive the $100,000 scholarship to Oxford University.

As a volunteer for the Canadian Cancer Society, Maike saw first-hand the struggle many patients face to pay transportation costs associated with cancer treatments. In 2014, she founded Katrin’s Karepackage in memory of her mother who passed away from cancer when Maike was 15 years old. In two years, she raised more than $110,000 and the program is now offered in both Newfoundland and Nova Scotia. In 2016, Maike received the Canadian Cancer Society’s national award for Outstanding Youth Leadership.
