Five ways to get moving this fall

24 September 2019

The Canadian Cancer Society recommends that all adults aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate daily activity that gets your heart going.

It's good to be active in different ways, including vigorous and moderate activities and strengthening exercises. Find your favourites and fit in at least one every day. There are lots of ways to fit physical activity into your day without going to a gym.

1. Fit in activity throughout the day

Take the stairs instead of the elevator, do some calf raises while you brush your teeth or stretch while you’re at your desk. Try to slot some activity in wherever you can – every little bit helps!

2. Workout during the commercials

Designate certain TV shows as exercise programs. While you’re watching, lift weights or do sit‐ups, walk on a treadmill or ride a stationary bike, jump rope or stretch.

3. Park further away from your destination

Parking at work? Try parking a street or two away from your office and enjoy the few minutes of walking each morning and afternoon. If you’re a commuter, why not try getting off of transit a stop or two early?

4. Make playtime with your kids physical

Instead of watching the kids play, join them in a game of tag or soccer. What about suggesting a park trip with a group of friends and their kids? Bring a frisbee, or a ball and have fun as a group.

5. Schedule a weekend hike

Instead of catching up with friends over a meal, why not try suggesting a weekend hike? Bring water and some healthy snacks and enjoy some scenery that you might not normally see!
