Have your say in this year’s federal budget

21 January 2019

Have your say in this year’s federal budgetLast year in a groundbreaking report on the experience of people living with cancer, we heard a clear message from Canadians: people want better access to cancer information and support services to meet the needs of those with cancer, survivors, caregivers and their families.

The Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) is uniquely positioned to meet this call to action. We are a national hub for delivering expertise, information, navigation and a range of supportive services, including transportation to and from cancer-related medical appointments, and our cancer helpline, which helps answer pressing questions about cancer.

Yet the reality is our services are at full capacity. With nearly 1 in 2 Canadians expected to be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime, we expect the demand for our services will continue to grow. We want to be able to offer equitable service across the country and tailor our programs to better meet the needs of vulnerable and high-need communities.

That’s why we are asking the federal government for a significant investment to help us expand our cancer information and support services for all Canadians living with all forms of cancer and their caregivers.

We are now asking you, our greatest supporters, to help us advance our mission even further.

Have your say

As part of the pre-budget process, the Standing Committee on Finance has invited Canadians to share their ideas on how funds should be allocated. This means you have the chance to let government know that CCS’s recommendation is important to you.

If you would like your voice to be heard, please send a personal email to budget2019@canada.ca and copy your local Federal Member of Parliament by January 29, 2019. Sample text is below that you are welcome to use.

Thank you for your support of this important initiative.

As your constituent, I am writing to ask you to support the Canadian Cancer Society’s (CCS) pre-budget recommendation to expand their cancer information and support services. With 1 in 2 Canadians expected to develop cancer in their lifetime, the demand for quality information and support is on the rise. CCS’s recommendation will help meet this growing demand by enabling them to expand their reach and provide free, confidential services and support in multiple languages to more Canadians.

As someone who is concerned about cancer in Canada, I believe we need to do more to address the emotional, practical and informational needs of people living with cancer and their families. CCS’s information and support services help fill in gaps left by a health system focused mainly on medical needs. Together, we can transform cancer care for Canadians from diagnosis through to survivorship.

Thank you for considering my request.
