Tip of the month: Sit less

Sitting for long periods may increase your risk of cancer, so with the weather warming up, there is no time like the present to get outside and move more! Take hourly breaks from sitting, especially if you work at a desk, and aim for 30 minutes of moderate daily activity to get your heart rate up. It reduces your risk of colorectal cancer and may reduce your risk of other types too. Here are 3 easy ways to get started:

  1. Start standing. Even if it’s as simple as standing instead of sitting while you’re on the bus, drinking your coffee, or chatting with a friend or coworker, standing more is a great first step in creating new routines to minimize the amount of time you spend sitting.
  2. Pace on the phone. In fact, you can make almost any sedentary activity more active by walking around instead of sitting. Whether you’re on the phone or watching TV, pacing is a good way to incorporate movement into an otherwise inactive pastime.
  3. Walk after a meal. Head for a brief walk instead of the couch after a meal! Not only will you get moving, a walk, even as short as 15 minutes, can help aid in digestion and control blood sugar.
