Changing lives through your support

Daffodil Month is about joining together with our community to give hope to those affected by cancer and their families. Thanks to the generosity of our donors during Daffodil Month and throughout the year, the Canadian Cancer Society can be there for everyone who needs us with programs and services to support and help Canadians through their cancer journeys.

In Halifax, Nova Scotia, buoyed by the generosity of the community, CCS recently opened The Sobey Cancer Support Centre, a facility designed to positively impact the quality of life for patients and their families during treatment.

The Sobey Cancer Support Centre includes an expansion on The Lodge That Gives, which provides lodging for those who must travel into Halifax for treatment, an upgraded dining room and restaurant-grade kitchen and an expanded wig and breast prosthesis fitting room. It also includes a new Program & Wellness Area, which contains rooms for activities such as yoga and Reiki, an exercise room and a Day Respite Room for families waiting between treatments.

For residents, their families, staff, and volunteers alike, The Sobey Cancer Support Centre is proving to be an incredibly impactful and special space. “My husband was nervous about leaving me in Halifax for treatment,” says Lodge resident Nancy Elden. “After he met the staff and saw how nice it was, it put his mind at rest.”

Long-time volunteer Avril Young explains; “the greatest need for patients and caregivers is more of this, a place that is welcoming and feels like home.”

Avril got involved with The Lodge That Gives in the spring of 2015 when she began a walking group for residents. Since the expansion, Avril has been making good use of the new Program & Wellness spaces by offering 1-on-1 personal training sessions.

Activity and healthy lifestyle are so important as a proactive measure, as well as during a cancer struggle. As a personal trainer, I wanted to offer my services because I felt like I could help,” she says. “When I saw this home-y and comfortable environment, it drew me in. This experience gives me so much joy and continues to affect me so much.”
