The Red Lipstick Warriors fight back

Prince George, British Columbia may be known to most Canadians as Northern BC’s largest city, but for those in Prince George, their claim to fame is entirely different.

This May, Prince George’s Relay For Life event will be celebrating its 25th anniversary, making it not only the longest running Relay For Life event, but also the only 24-hour event in the country. What’s more, for the last 3 years running, the Prince George event has also been the top fundraising event in Canada.

5-year event attendee Aimee Cassie explains; “the amount of support at this event is what really draws you in. You don’t even realize the impact of people walking together on the track, shoulder to shoulder with you until you need that support.”

Aimee first registered a team only a few weeks prior to the 2012 event. Her mother had recently received a terminal cancer diagnosis and after hearing an ad on the radio, Aimee knew that the event would be exactly what her family needed during a very difficult time.

“We wanted to show support for my mom and her fight, but she was very reluctant to participate because she wasn’t ready to face her cancer diagnosis,” says Aimee. “She also didn’t think was physically capable of walking around the track. Within 15 minutes of being there, she was hooked. She ended up walking 7 laps that day and got a huge boost from the experience.”

In their first year their team, named the Red Lipstick Warriors after Aimee’s mom’s signature lipstick shade, raised $1,500. Sadly, Aimee’s mother passed away in October of that year.

Yet, the team has continued to push forward and has grown from 10 members to 20 over the last few years. In total, the Red Lipstick Warriors have raised nearly $45,000 in honor of their mother, wife and friend.

“I believe in Relay. I believe in the power of Relay,” says Aimee passionately. “I look around the track, and be it a cancer survivor or a daughter who lost her mother, I feel the emotion and heart of every single person.”
