53,000 Quebecers wants to amend the Tobacco Act

The fight against the tobacco industry goes to the National Assembly

Montreal, November 26, 2013 —MNA Diane Gadoury-Hamelin, sponsor of the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) – Quebec Division’s electronic petition, will today table the first 10,333 signatures at the National Assembly. To date, 53,000 citizens have shown their support for the CCS’s petition. It is a clear step forward in the campaign to amend the Tobacco Act to protect youths from the industry.

Those who have signed the petition are making concrete demands for:

  1. A ban on flavours (including menthol).
  2. The regulation of electronic cigarettes.
  3. The adoption of plain and standardized packaging.
  4. A moratorium on tobacco products.

In Quebec, smoking is responsible for a third of cancer deaths, which are all preventable. Urgent action is needed because tens of thousands of youths start smoking each year and the average age when they pick up the habit is 12.5 years, that is, during the summer between primary and secondary schools! To discourage the next generation of smokers, the CCS wants the immediate strengthening of the Tobacco Act.

Massive public backing: speedy government action expected

According to a Leger Marketing Survey, nine out of ten Quebecers would like the government to make tobacco products less attractive to youths. In addition, 82% support a ban on the marketing of new tobacco products and more than 75% support a ban on flavoured tobacco products.

“Public support for the CCS’s demands is unquestionable. The government must act now. A busy parliamentary agenda cannot justify the Health and Social Services Minister putting off the battle to be waged against tobacco, which kills more than 10,000 Quebecers every year!” says Suzanne Dubois, Executive Director, Canadian Cancer Society – Quebec Division.
