CCS Receives $246,800 OTF Grant for the Walking School Bus

Toronto -

The Canadian Cancer Society (CCS), Ontario Region, has received an Ontario Trillium Foundation’s (OTF) Grow Investment Stream grant. These grants are intended to help organizations expand an existing, proven, not-for-profit project.

CCS was awarded $246,800 over 3 years to increase physical activity levels among children by expanding the Walking School Bus (WSB) program to 30 schools in Regional Municipality of Waterloo.

“The Walking School Bus program is a fantastic initiative for getting children to and from school safely,” said Catherine Fife, MPP for Kitchener-Waterloo. “I’d like to commend the Canadian Cancer Society for their continued work to make sure that children develop healthy habits.”

WSB is an organized system of walking with school children from home to school and back. Students in the same geographic area walk to school together under the supervision of an adult or youth volunteer. Like a regular school bus, the WSB follows a planned and safe route with scheduled stops. Parents and other volunteers receive training and support to develop and implement the program and to supervise children walking to school.

“This welcome funding is coming at a time in Ontario where there is increased investment and recognition of the positive benefits of active school travel,” says John Atkinson, director of cancer prevention at CCS in Ontario. “Developing healthy childhood habits at an early age has been shown to have long-term health benefits.”

CCS will work with local partners in Waterloo, Wellington and Dufferin, including school boards, Waterloo Region Student Transportation Services, the Waterloo Region Block Parent program, and the Region of Waterloo Public Health’s Active and Safe Routes to School program.

CCS thanks the Ontario Trillium Foundation, and looks forward to the positive impact that the Walking School Bus program will have on the lives of the children and adults.
