Society welcomes pledge to renew federal cancer partnership

29 August 2015

Toronto -

The Canadian Cancer Society welcomes renewed federal funding for the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer, as promised today by Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

“Cancer is a national health challenge that demands national solutions,” says Pamela Fralick, CEO and President, Canadian Cancer Society. “With Canada facing a projected 40% increase in cancer cases over the next 15 years, there’s a growing need for nationwide action supported by the Partnership and others.”

Today the Prime Minister promised that if re-elected his government would maintain the Partnership's funding beyond its current scheduled expiry in 2017. The 5-year, $250 million funding extension would enable the Partnership to build on past achievements, which include supporting the Canadian Cancer Research Alliance and driving major nationwide initiatives to achieve higher performance in cancer screening, diagnosis and treatment.

“As an early supporter we applauded the Partnership’s creation in 2007 and remain committed to its future” says Fralick. “We look forward to continue working with the Partnership’s dedicated staff and leadership to achieve the greatest possible impact against cancer and for cancer patients.”

The Society is calling on all federal parties to make health a priority in the 2015 election campaign, and to support policies that will contribute to the eradication of cancer, the sustainability of our health systems, and enhanced quality of life for patients and their families.
