Fundraising and the Canadian Cancer Society

Toronto -

At the Canadian Cancer Society, we undertake our fundraising activities for one reason and one reason only to raise critical funds to fulfill our mission of eradicating cancer and improving the quality of life for people with cancer and their families. Our fundraising efforts last year allowed us to invest more than $127 million in our mission work.

When looking at our most recent financials, our fundraising expenses (excluding lotteries) are 32.1%. If you include lotteries, they are 39.1% of total expense. Our administration costs are 4.3% of total expense.

Our fundraising costs have increased over the years, but there are good reasons for this. We have expanded and diversified our fundraising activities across the country so we can continue to be as effective as possible in raising money to support the full breadth of our mission work. It is through these fundraising initiatives that we reach more Canadians and attract more donors so we can ensure our fight against cancer remains strong and helps as many Canadians as possible.

Ten years ago we invested $82 million for our mission work, this year we invested more than $127 million, a 55% increase in dollars directly invested in the fight against cancer. We are proud that we’ve been able to provide more funds each year to support our work across Canada.

Of the funds directed to our mission work, research receives the largest amount – it is our single largest investment each and every year. Last year, we directed almost 40% of these funds – $48 million – to fund impactful cancer research across Canada last year. In the last ten years, the Society has invested more than $450 million to fund cancer research projects that have made a difference to Canadians.

The Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) is the only national charity that supports Canadians with all cancers in communities across the country. No other organization does what we do; we are the voice for Canadians who care about cancer. We fund groundbreaking research, provide a support system for all those affected by cancer and advocate to governments for important social change.
