Canadian Cancer Society to close office in Yellowknife

08 August 2016

Yellowknife -

The Canadian Cancer Society has made the difficult decision to close its physical office space in Yellowknife, but staff and volunteers will remain active in the community.

The Society will close its Yellowknife office on September 30, 2016, when its lease for its current office space ends.

“Few people are engaging with the Society in our physical office setting,” says Dan Holinda, Executive Director of the Canadian Cancer Society, Alberta/NWT Division. “As online and electronic interactions continue to grow, we realize we can better serve all Canadians living with cancer – including people in Yellowknife – without needing to rely on bricks and mortar.”

The Society’s commitment to you

While the Society’s physical office space in Yellowknife may be closing, its commitment to the community is not changing.

“Cancer patients, their families and caregivers in Yellowknife will continue to have full access to all of the Society’s support services,” says Holinda. “Society staff and volunteers will also continue to provide a variety of meaningful opportunities for you to fight back against cancer, including our popular annual campaigns Relay For Life and Daffodil Month.”

The following Society support services are available to all people living with cancer in Yellowknife and area:

  • For up-to-date and trusted cancer information, call the Society’s Cancer Information Service toll-free at 1-888-939-3333.
  • For comforting peer support, request a match through the Society’s CancerConnection telephone peer-support program by calling toll-free 1-888-939-333, or visit, the Society’s trusted online support community.
  • Request a wig via the Society’s Wig Lending Program by calling toll-free at 1-800-661-2262.

“We thank the community for its unwavering support and understanding why we are closing our physical office space in Yellowknife,” says Holinda. “Because of the shift in how people in Yellowknife are interacting with the Society, the financially-responsible thing for us to do is close our physical space and redirect that investment to further our life-saving mission work: cancer prevention, research and support.”

Summer office hours

Please note that local Society staff will be away on holidays starting later this week, meaning the Yellowknife office will be closed temporarily between August 12 and September 7, 2016.

Should you have any questions or want to know more about the cancer support services available to you during this time, please call the Canadian Cancer Society toll-free at 1-800-661-2262.
