Annual hockey tournament raising money for Fort McMurray

24 May 2016

Calgary -

Calgarians will lace up their skates this fall to raise money in support of cancer patients who have been displaced by the devastating wildfire in the Fort McMurray area, and in honour of the men and women who are courageously battling the blaze.

The 10th annual Face Off Against Cancer charity hockey tournament will be raising money in support of the Canadian Cancer Society’s Wood Buffalo Emergency Fund and research into lung cancer.

Through the Wood Buffalo Emergency Fund, the Canadian Cancer Society is providing a one-time subsidy of $1,000 to cancer patients from Fort McMurray and the surrounding Wood Buffalo Region to use for their greatest need.

“We immediately knew we wanted this year’s tournament to help those affected by the wildfire,” says Brent Osmond, volunteer chair of the Face Off Against Cancer organizing committee. “We can only imagine how difficult being displaced from your home is, so the committee decided we had to do something to help ease the burden of cancer while patients and the Fort McMurray community heal.”

Long-term impact of fighting fires

The charity hockey tournament will also be honouring the brave men and women who are currently battling the blaze up north.

Firefighting is a dangerous job. There are the immediate risks that come with trying to control fires. But firefighters are also at an increased risk of developing certain cancers, such as of the lungs, because they are exposed to smoke and chemicals on the job.

“That’s why it is equally as important to us that we raise money for the very best research that will continue to discover new ways to better prevent, detect, treat and beat lung cancer,” says Osmond.
