Grande Prairie women making a difference in fight for life

10 October 2014

Grande Prairie -

The Canadian Cancer Society marks Women’s Cancer Health Awareness Month every October and, as such, we want to celebrate the outstanding contributions two local women recently made to the fight for life.

“Survivor Alice Brick and fundraiser Mandy Kozie have brought so much hope to the fight for life,” says Angie Dauncey of the Canadian Cancer Society. “These remarkable women helped bring us closer to that day when no Canadian fears cancer.”

Brick is a two-time cancer survivor who just lost her husband of 52 years to the disease about a year ago. She shared her touching story as the keynote speaker at the 19th annual Women’s Health Awareness Luncheon on October 1, for which she received a standing ovation. Brick also came out to support the Society’s annual fundraising gala, Harvest of Hope, on October 4.

“Alice is an amazing woman all around and we’re very lucky to have her as a friend and volunteer,” says Dauncey.

Kozie attended Harvest of Hope, where she shaved her hair – all 29 inches of it that she has grown over the past eight years. Kozie shaved her head in honour of her grandfathers, one of whom passed away from cancer and another who is currently battling the disease.

“Mandy’s reaction to losing all her hair was priceless – she was absolutely thrilled to have raised nearly $2,000, which well surpassed her goal of $1,500,” says Dauncey.

This year, the Women’s Health Awareness Luncheon and Harvest of Hope raised a combined total of nearly $35,000.
