Saskatchewan Breast Cancer Network

A Thinking, Learning and Caring Collaboration: Promoting a Healthy Lifestyle

The Saskatchewan Breast Cancer Network (SBCN) is a collaboration of partners working together to enhance awareness and access to education, information and support for those concerned with breast health/breast cancer. Partners include the Canadian Cancer Society, the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency, regional health authorities and support organizations.

With this grant, SBCN plans to build upon its past success at increasing awareness and access to breast health/breast cancer education and information by expanding the focus of its efforts to risk reduction and early detection for all cancers.

Expected project results include an increased understanding of education needs specific to breast cancer survivors, increased public awareness of cancer risk reduction strategies and continued collaboration within the breast cancer community.

Three key objectives will guide the work effort:

The first objective ensures that senior, young and aboriginal breast cancer survivors have the information and education they need with regards to risk reduction and early detection of all cancers. A series of activities (including a Think Tank, resource development, and collaboratively implemented education events/activities) are planned with the goal of assisting breast cancer survivor’s awareness of healthy lifestyle.

The second objective is designed to increase public awareness of risk reduction and early detection strategies for all cancers. Leveraging its connections in the breast cancer community, SBCN plans to address the healthy lifestyle education and information needs within Saskatchewan. Activities include establishing collaborative relationships with Health Region(s) and smaller urban centres, two community based Think Tanks to assist in identifying community-based resources and delivery methods. The culmination of these efforts will be collaboratively planned and implemented community education events/activities.

The third objective will enhance SBCN's role in facilitating collaboration amongst stakeholders within the breast cancer community. Several deliberate activities are planned with the goal of increasing awareness of SBCN’s role and activities in Saskatchewan, enhancing communication within the breast cancer community, and exploring opportunities for future collaboration and activities in order to continue the momentum established by the overall project.

Working together in partnership to achieve these deliverables will contribute to an enhanced, expanded, sustainable network with increased stakeholder involvement.
