Dr Mohammad Akbari pinpointed a new breast cancer susceptibility gene.
Dr Mohammad Akbari led an international team who studied blood samples from over 15,000 women with familial breast cancer. Mutations in the RECQL gene were associated with increased breast cancer susceptibility, pinpointing RECQL as a new tumour suppressor. RECQL has also been added to some genetic profiling tests to help assess a woman’s breast cancer risk. This research was supported through a partnership with the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.
