James and Rebecca Hamm
Anniversary adventure celebrates love and life
It was very important that the fundraiser be in honour of my uncle, because it’s a great way to show our support for him.
Every step James and Rebecca Hamm took during their 300-plus kilometer journey through the rolling hills of Scotland was a step closer to the day when no Canadian fears cancer.
The couple from Grande Prairie, AB had planned to celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary by hiking across one of the first countries they visited as husband and wife. But their celebratory getaway took a new direction when they learned 2 months prior to their departure that James’s uncle had been diagnosed with lung cancer.
The couple decided to turn their 16-day hike into a fundraising opportunity for the Canadian Cancer Society, with the goal to raise $8,000.
“It was very important to us that the fundraiser be in honour of my uncle, because it’s a great way to show our support for him and what he is going through,” said James.
The Hamms lost loved ones to pancreatic cancer and brain cancer last year.
In addition to asking family and friends for support, James and Rebecca pledged to donate $5 of for every kilometer they hiked in Scotland.
“We think it’s important to show that you support the fundraiser with your wallet as well,” James said. “We wanted to be an example for others by doing what we were asking them to do.”
James and Rebecca completed their Scotland hike on June 22, their bodies a little sore, but hearts proud of what they were able to accomplish – both physically and in the fight against cancer.Donate now
