Cosmetic pesticides
We are calling on local governments to enact bylaws to ban the sale and use of cosmetic pesticides. We also call for a phase-out of pesticide use on golf courses and sporting facilities.
Appropriate action should be taken to limit the risk to human health, this is especially true when using pesticides on lawns is to prevent weeds and plants that can be removed in other potentially less damaging ways.
A ‘wait and see’ approach is not providing adequate protection for the health of children and communities. Because the evidence linking pesticides and cancer is suggestive and growing we believe the Canadian government should be taking precautionary action.
Exemptions
Our call for a ban does not apply to using pesticides:
• in agricultural settings to grow food
• to ensure public health and safety
• to prevent environmental damage
In these instances, the issue is much more complex since there can be health benefits in controlling pests.
