Husky Energy Healing Garden

As of May 31, 2013, Daffodil Place has helped ease the burden for 2,464 guests from 305 different communities who have stayed here while receiving cancer care. The facility is designed to be a home away from home for people with cancer and their caregivers. Daffodil Place is indeed fulfilling part of the Canadian Cancer Society’s mission – to enhance the quality of life of people living with cancer.
The Canadian Cancer Society has expanded the programs and services offered at Daffodil Place to further enhance the quality of life of those who stay here. We are proud and pleased to announce that the construction of the Husky Energy Healing Garden on our property is complete.
The garden
The Husky Energy Healing Garden is located on the west side of Daffodil Place. It features walkways, a pond, a gazebo, numerous plants and shrubs, quiet sitting areas, and a vegetable garden for the guests of Daffodil Place. The perimeter of the space is enclosed by a privacy fence and is surrounded by oak trees to enhance the appearance and reduce noise.
One of the features of the healing garden is the community vegetable garden for our guests. There are two educational components to this vegetable garden. The first component will focus on nutrition and healthy eating. Volunteer nutritionists will recommend which vegetables to grow. They will work with guests to teach the nutritional value of items being grown and their importance to a healthy eating regime. There will also be a professional chef visit Daffodil Place on a regular basis to teach guests how to prepare the vegetables with suggested meal plans. These sessions will be conducted in the evening hours as a regular part of the Daffodil Place activity program.
The second educational piece will be facilitated by professionals from the horticultural and agricultural industry. They will teach guests how to prepare the planting area, plant the product, properly maintain the garden during the growth period, and harvest the crop. These sessions will take place on weekends.
How our garden helps
Healthy eating can help reduce the risk of cancer and will also enhance the quality of life for people living with cancer. The educational programs that will come from the Husky Energy Healing Garden will help build gardening skills and knowledge of healthy eating. Guests will take these skills back to their communities and share them with their families, friends, and community members.
Battling cancer often includes resolving complex emotional issues. Positively managing stress associated with this illness often improves patient outcomes. Medical research tells us that people who have access to psychological supportive environments, such as healing gardens, often experience improved clinical outcomes. Our healing garden will help improve the outlook of those who stay at Daffodil Place. Everybody enjoys the beauty of nature and can find it peaceful and comforting.
