The story of Cops for Cancer

In 1994, Gary Goulet, an Edmonton police officer, met a young boy who was being teased at school because of his hair loss from chemotherapy. Goulet’s head was already shaved so he gathered a group of police officers willing to shave their own heads in support of the young boy with cancer. The act of kindness received media coverage, along with calls and letters from citizens touched by the officer’s campaign.

Goulet received many letters, but one letter moved Goulet to do more. A mother whose daughter had cancer urged Goulet to continue his campaign by challenging other police departments to get involved.

Goulet contacted the Canadian Cancer Society and the head-shaving event caught on. The program is now one of the largest community fundraising events for the Canadian Cancer Society.
