Vocational Counselling

Many people with cancer are able to return to work after treatment. Sometimes people are able to return to work with very little job adjustment needed. Vocational rehabilitation counsellors can help people when the cancer or cancer treatment affects their ability to return to work. Vocational counsellors:

  • assess a person's suitability for returning to work after cancer treatment
  • can make suggestions on alternative jobs or retraining
  • serve as a liaison between the cancer patient and an employer if needed

Sometimes a person with cancer may have a functional problem or disability that requires a change in their job duties or their work environment. Sometimes they need to make a job or career change. Vocational counsellors can help a person with cancer obtain and use special technology or tools to help them do their job. They can also help people find a suitable job when there are physical or functional limitations.

Employee assistance programs, disability insurance carriers or counselling departments in the treatment centre can provide information on how to find vocational rehabilitation counsellors.
