Stomach cancer statistics
To provide the most current cancer statistics, statistical methods are used to estimate the number of new cancer cases and deaths until actual data become available.
Incidence and mortality
Incidence is the total number of new cases of cancer. Mortality is the number of deaths due to cancer.
In 2017, an estimated:
- 3,500 Canadians were diagnosed with stomach cancer.
- 2,100 Canadians died from stomach cancer.
- 2,200 men were diagnosed with stomach cancer and 1,250 died from it.
- 1,300 women were diagnosed with stomach cancer and 790 died from it.

I’m extremely grateful to the Canadian Cancer Society for funding my research with an Innovation Grant.
Great progress has been made
Some cancers, such as thyroid and testicular, have survival rates of over 90%. Other cancers, such as pancreatic, brain and esophageal, continue to have very low survival rates.
