Non-melanoma skin cancer statistics

Although non-melanoma skin cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in Canadians, it is reported separately because it accounts for very few deaths. Most cancer registries do not collect information on non-melanoma skin cancer (basal and squamous).

To provide the most current cancer statistics, researchers use statistical methods to estimate the number of new cancer cases and deaths until actual data become available.

Incidence and mortality

Incidence is the total number of new cases of cancer. Mortality is the number of deaths due to cancer.

It is estimated that in 2013:

81,700 Canadians will be diagnosed with non-melanoma skin cancer.
420 Canadians will die from non-melanoma skin cancer.
45,000 men will be diagnosed with non-melanoma skin cancer.
36,800 women will be diagnosed with non-melanoma skin cancer.
