Melanoma statistics
To provide the most current cancer statistics, researchers use statistical methods to estimate the number of new cancer cases and deaths until actual data become available.
Incidence and mortality
Incidence is the total number of new cases of cancer. Mortality is the number of deaths due to cancer.
It is estimated that in 2013:
- 6,000 Canadians will be diagnosed with melanoma.
- 1,050 Canadians will die from melanoma.
- 3,300 men will be diagnosed with melanoma and 640 will die from it.
- 2,700 women will be diagnosed with melanoma and 390 will die from it.
Chances (probability) of developing or dying from melanoma
Based on 2007 estimates:
- About 1 in 63 Canadian men is expected to develop melanoma during his lifetime and 1 in 287 will die from it.
- About 1 in 79 Canadian women is expected to develop melanoma during her lifetime and 1 in 420 will die from it.
