Symptoms of cancer of the renal pelvis or ureter

Cancer of the renal pelvis or ureter may not cause any signs or symptoms in its early stages. Signs and symptoms often appear as the tumour gets bigger or grows deeper into the wall of the renal pelvis or ureter. Other health conditions can cause the same symptoms as cancer of the renal pelvis or ureter.

See your doctor if you have these signs or symptoms:

  • blood in the urine (pee), which is called hematuria
  • back pain
  • pain on your side just below the ribs (flank pain)
  • burning or pain while urinating
  • a need to urinate more often than usual (frequent urination)
  • fatigue
  • loss of appetite
  • unexplained weight loss
