Cancer cells can spread from the renal pelvis or ureter to other parts of the body. This spread is called metastasis.

Understanding how a type of cancer usually grows and spreads helps your healthcare team plan your treatment and future care. If cancer of the renal pelvis or ureter spreads, it can spread to the following:

  • bladder
  • parts of the kidney around the renal pelvis
  • fat around the kidney or ureter
  • lymph nodes
  • prostate
  • uterus
  • vagina
  • abdominal or pelvic wall
  • lung
  • bone
  • liver
