Reducing your risk for prostate cancer
You may lower your risk of developing prostate cancer by doing the following.
Eat foods that are low in fat
Studies suggest that eating a diet high in fat may increase your risk for prostate cancer. This includes milk and dairy products, which have animal fat.
Eating a well-balanced diet and lowering how much fat you eat may help lower your risk for prostate cancer.
Eat less red or processed meat
Studies show that eating a lot of red meat puts you at higher risk for prostate cancer, and eating a lot processed meat may increase risk. Eating less red or processed meat may help lower your risk.
Eat less dairy
Some studies have shown that diets high in milk and other dairy products may increase your risk for prostate cancer. Eating less dairy may help lower your risk.
Maintain a healthy body weight
Some studies show that being overweight or obese may increase the risk of advanced prostate cancer. You may lower your risk by having a healthy body weight. Eating well and being physically active can help you have a healthy body weight.
Avoid exposure to pesticides
Avoid or lower your long-term exposure to pesticides. Avoid using pesticides for cosmetic reasons. If you have to use pesticides, try to use smaller amounts. Follow occupational health and safety requirements in your province, such as avoiding areas treated with pesticides for a given amount of time. Follow product label instructions on how to safely use pesticides. Wear the recommended protective clothing and equipment, such as gloves or a mask, when applying pesticides.
Follow occupational health and safety guidelines
Whenever possible, avoid exposure to cadmium. Follow all safety guidelines if you work in smelting, battery manufacturing or rubber manufacturing industries.
