Treatment of stage IV penile cancer
The following are treatment options for stage IV penile cancer. The types of treatments given are based on the unique needs of the person with cancer.
Surgery may be offered for stage IV penile cancer to relieve the symptoms of advanced disease (palliative surgery). The main goal of palliative surgery is to improve a man’s quality of life. The types of surgery are:
- wide local excision
- The tumour is removed along with a margin of normal tissue around it.
- removal of lymph nodes
- pelvic exenteration
Radiation therapy may be offered for stage IV penile cancer to relieve the symptoms of advanced disease (palliative radiation therapy). The main goal of palliative radiation therapy is to improve a man’s quality of life. The type of radiation therapy is external beam radiation therapy.
Chemotherapy may be offered for stage IV penile cancer in men whose cancer has spread to distant parts of the body, such as the lungs or liver. Chemotherapy may be combined with surgery or radiation therapy.
