Supportive therapy for parathyroid cancer
The symptoms and related health problems of parathyroid cancer are almost always caused by increased calcium levels in the blood due to the parathyroid gland producing too much parathyroid hormone (PTH). PTH regulates the calcium level in the blood.
Hypercalcemia is a condition caused by increased amounts of calcium in the blood. The goal of treatment of hypercalcemia caused by parathyroid cancer is to decrease the secretion of PTH.
Supportive therapy may be used to:
- reduce the blood calcium level to normal before surgery
- treat high calcium levels caused by recurrent disease or metastatic disease
It was very important that the fundraiser be in honour of my uncle, because it’s a great way to show our support for him.
Volunteers provide comfort and kindness
Thousands of Canadian Cancer Society volunteers work in regional cancer centres, lodges and community hospitals to support people receiving treatment.
