Supportive therapy for parathyroid cancer
The symptoms and related health problems of parathyroid cancer are almost always caused by increased calcium levels in the blood due to the parathyroid gland producing too much parathyroid hormone (PTH). PTH regulates the calcium level in the blood.
Hypercalcemia is a condition caused by increased amounts of calcium in the blood. The goal of treatment of hypercalcemia caused by parathyroid cancer is to decrease the secretion of PTH.
Supportive therapy may be used to:
- reduce the blood calcium level to normal before surgery
- treat high calcium levels caused by recurrent disease or metastatic disease
Clinical trial discovery improves quality of life
A clinical trial led by the Society’s NCIC Clinical Trials group found that men with prostate cancer who are treated with intermittent courses of hormone therapy live as long as those receiving continuous therapy.
