Treatment of localized parathyroid cancer
The following are treatment options for localized parathyroid cancer. The types of treatments given are based on the unique needs of the person with cancer.
Surgery is the primary treatment for localized parathyroid cancer. The types of surgery are:
- en bloc resection to remove the entire tumour and nearby tissue
- lymphadenectomy (removal of lymph nodes) to remove enlarged or firm lymph nodes in the neck
Radiation therapy may be offered for localized parathyroid cancer. External beam radiation therapy may be given following surgery to reduce the chance of local recurrence.
People with parathyroid cancer may be offered the opportunity to participate in clinical trials. For more information, go to clinical trials.
Within about 12 hours of being at Camp Goodtime, everything started to change, and that week was cathartic, transformative. It was the first time I got to know myself.
Support from someone who has ‘been there’
The Canadian Cancer Society’s peer support program is a telephone support service that matches cancer patients and their caregivers with specially trained volunteers.
