Treatment of childhood leukemia

Cancer treatment is given by cancer specialists (oncologists). Some specialize in surgery, some in radiation therapy and others in chemotherapy (drugs). These doctors work with the cancer patient to decide on a treatment plan.

Treatment plans are designed to meet the unique needs of each child with cancer. Treatment planning should involve a multidisciplinary team of cancer specialists who have experience in treating children with leukemia. This may include:

  • pediatric hematologist or oncologist
  • pediatric radiation oncologist

Treatment decisions for childhood leukemia are based on:

  • type of leukemia
  • prognostic factors
  • child's age
  • overall health of the child

Treatment options for childhood leukemia

The treatment of childhood leukemias may involve chemotherapy, radiation therapy, stem cell transplant or combinations of these therapies. Treatment may also include various supportive measures to treat complications and side effects, such as blood transfusions, antibiotic therapy or nutritional support.

Clinical Trials

Clinical trials investigate better ways to prevent, detect and treat cancer. Because childhood leukemia is uncommon and researchers are trying to improve outcomes, many children with leukemia will be offered participation in a clinical trial. The Children's Clinical Oncology Group (COG) conducts clinical trials for children with cancer in North America, Australia and New Zealand. If a child does not take part in a clinical trial, they will be offered the best known treatment for their leukemia, known as standard treatment.
