Treatment of stage III Hodgkin lymphoma

The following are treatment options for stage III Hodgkin lymphoma (HL). The types of treatments given are based on the unique needs of the person with cancer.

A CT scan or positron emission tomography (PET) scan may be used during or after chemotherapy to assess how much more treatment is needed. Depending on the results of the scans, more chemotherapy and radiation or just radiation to areas of bulky disease may be given.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy is the primary treatment for stage III HL. Combination chemotherapy is used to treat HL. The types of combination chemotherapy are:

  • ABVD
    • doxorubicin (Adriamycin)
    • bleomycin (Blenoxane)
    • vinblastine (Velbe)
    • dacarbazine (DTIC)
  • Stanford V
    • mechlorethamine (nitrogen mustard, Mustargen)
    • doxorubicin
    • vinblastine
    • vincristine (Oncovin)
    • bleomycin
    • etoposide (Vepesid)
    • prednisone (Deltasone)
  • BEACOPP
    • bleomycin
    • etoposide
    • doxorubicin
    • cyclophosphamide (Cytoxan, Procytox)
    • vincristine
    • procarbazine hydrochloride (Matulane)
    • prednisone
  • MOPP
    • mechlorethamine
    • vincristine
    • procarbazine hydrochloride
    • prednisone

Radiation therapy

External beam radiation therapy may be offered for stage III HL. It is given after chemotherapy if the HL is localized in an area of the body and can be included in the radiation field.

Clinical trials

People with HL may be offered the opportunity to participate in clinical trials. For more information, go to clinical trials.
