If childhood bone cancer spreads
Cancer cells can spread from the bone to other parts of the body. This spread is called a metastasis.
Understanding how a type of cancer usually grows and spreads helps your child’s healthcare team plan your child’s treatment and future care.
During and after treatment, diagnostic tests will be done to detect early evidence of spread to other organs. The most common site of spread of Ewing sarcoma and osteosarcoma is the lungs, but bone cancer rarely spreads to other bones.
Ewing sarcoma can also spread to the bone marrow, brain and lymph nodes.
Osteosarcoma can also spread to the brain.
Seeing my sister Erin – a young mother – struggle with the emotional blow and then the physical toll of cancer treatment made me want to do something to help women feel confident.
Establishing a national caregivers strategy
The Canadian Cancer Society is actively lobbying the federal government to establish a national caregivers strategy to ensure there is more financial support for this important group of people.
