“I wish the vaccine had been available when I was younger,” Bond says. “Having gone through what I went through, I cannot understand why parents would choose not to have their children vaccinated against HPV.”

The HPV vaccine can prevent cancer in both males and females, but not enough children are getting vaccinated.

In 2016, nearly 4,400 Canadians will be diagnosed with an HPV cancer and about 1,200 Canadians will die from an HPV cancer.

Mouth and throat cancers caused by HPV are rising sharply in Canada, especially among men. The incidence of HPV mouth and throat cancers increased 56% in males and 17% in females between 1992 and 2012. Mouth and throat cancers represent about one-third of all HPV cancers in Canada. The Canadian Cancer Society urges you to get your children 9 and older vaccinated for free through publicly funded school-based vaccination programs, where available, to help reduce their risk of developing an HPV-related cancer. It takes a moment and can make a huge difference to their futures. The Society is also calling for HPV vaccination programs to be expanded to boys in provinces and territories that do not yet have a school-based program for boys – let your provincial government representative know you support this.
