Dr Abhijit GuhaDr Abhijit Guha, a neurosurgeon and cancer researcher, is one of the 2011 recipients of the Canadian Cancer Society’s Medal of Courage. Dr Guha is being honoured posthumously. Sadly, he passed away on November 8, 2011 following a courageous fight against acute myeloblastic leukemia.

The Medal of Courage is awarded to an individual who has exhibited outstanding, unusual courage in their own personal battle with cancer, while contributing significantly to help further the mission of the Canadian Cancer Society or cancer control in general.

In addition to his dedication to his patients and his significant contributions to cancer research, Dr Guha was a leader in encouraging South Asians to get tested to see if they are matches for bone marrow transplants. He was also involved in charitable work in India building the neurosciences institute in Kolkata.

The award is being presented on Daffodil Day, a special day where Canadians can take a moment to reflect upon the thousands of people who are on a cancer journey and to remember those who have died.

Dr Guha’s tireless efforts will not be forgotten by the Society’s volunteers and staff or by his colleagues around the world.
