Relay For Life: Our New Year's resolutions

A look back at 2015

We are so proud of what our Relayers accomplished in 2015 – not the least of which was raising nearly $2 million to fund the most promising cancer research in Canada and caring support programs for people living with cancer. Your support at Relay For Life has made a significant difference in the lives of people living with cancer in your community and across the country.

With nearly 4,000 Relayers attending 23 Relays in Alberta and the Northwest Territories, 2015 was a year to remember.

So what were some of your favourite moments? We were thankful to hear from you in our survey about your Relay experience.

Relay For Life participants

“I loved every minute of being part of Relay For Life! What a special event and experience that was – emotional to the end with happy tears while watching those inspiring activities, dedicated survivors, participants and volunteers… and sad tears while looking at the luminaries. Even now writing this message – it gets me! I will remember this for a long time.”
~ Airdrie Relayer, 2015

“This was a very humbling experience for me, and as long as I'm alive I don’t ever want to miss Relay For Life.”
~Fort McMurray Relayer, 2015

Here are some of the things we learned from you this past Relay season:

  • You’re making Relay a supportive place for cancer survivors. 90% of survivors who responded to the survey felt Relay For Life made them feel they were not alone in their cancer journey.
  • Our participants are motivated by Relay. 80% of participants who responded to the survey indicated they would definitely participate again in the following year.
  • The volunteers who make the events possible are excited about being involved in Relay. 75% of volunteers who responded to the survey said they felt valued and had a meaningful experience.

The year ahead

Relay For Life is always one of the highlights of the year for participants and survivors, as well as Society staff and volunteers. We strive every year to take our learning forward and create an even more memorable experience the next year.

That’s why we’re making some exciting and necessary changes to Relay For Life in 2016:

1. Community amalgamations: Based on community feedback, we have combined some Relay For Life events in Alberta. Our participants and volunteers have told us they want an exciting and enthusiastic atmosphere at Relay, and this consolidation will give our Relayers just that – a place to unite in the fight for life, and to have the most impact possible with their fundraising. 2. Theme laps and fun elements: Along the same lines, we want to amp up the fun at Relay For Life. Expect to see more theme laps, games and activities at your Relay this year! If you have any suggestions on great theme laps and activities, please let us know on your event Facebook page.

3. Event-day registration: In past years, only the Team Captain registered at the event. This year, we are asking each participant to register and submit their donations separately. You will still be able to submit team donations towards your overall fundraising total!

We’re looking forward to another great year at Relay For Life and we know our Relayers will continue to go the distance to make the greatest impact in the fight for life. Every dollar raised, every kilometre clocked, every baton exchanged at Relay For Life matters.

Thank you for an amazing 2015 Relay season! We can’t wait to see what you accomplish this year.

Register your Relay team today to be part of the experience at Relay For Life in 2016. Whether you are cheering on survivors, walking the track, passing the baton to your teammate or joining in exciting trackside activities, Relay For Life is more than just a cancer walk - it’s a journey.
