Canadian Cancer Society will continue to serve the people of Medicine Hat despite office closure

19 May 2016

As we announced earlier this year, the Canadian Cancer Society has made the extremely difficult decision to close our office in Medicine Hat sometime in 2016. That time has now come.

Our community office will officially close on Friday, May 20, 2016; however, please know we will continue to serve the people of Medicine Hat.

The Society is committed to all people living with cancer and our office closure will not affect the support services we have to offer.

Canadian Cancer Society staff and volunteers will continue to provide critical support to people living with cancer in Medicine Hat and surrounding communities as we always have. Our CancerConnection peer-support program, Cancer Information Service, Compassionate Financial Assistance Program and Wig Lending Program will still be readily available to those who need them.

Patients who must leave Medicine Hat to receive their treatment in Calgary, Lethbridge, Red Deer or Edmonton – where comprehensive cancer treatment centres are located in Alberta – can also call us for free and reliable rides to and from their accommodations and the care facilities through our Volunteer Driver Program.

And, our dedicated supporters ensure everyone from Medicine Hat benefits from the Society’s cancer prevention advocacy work and investments in groundbreaking research that continues to find new ways to better prevent, detect, treat and beat cancer.

Deciding factors
As we shared earlier this year, the Canadian Cancer Society is closing its doors in Medicine Hat to manage repeated economic decline in Alberta. As a result, we are taking the necessary action to protect our donors’ investments in life-saving cancer research and critical support programs for people living with cancer.

We decided 2016 would be the year to close our office in your community as our lease for this space is coming to an end.

As our services can easily be accessed online or over the phone, we could no longer justify the expense of maintaining office space in the community, as there wasn’t much foot traffic through the door. We know, however, this is not a reflection of the dedication and passion the people of Medicine Hat have for the fight for life.

We are so grateful for your contributions of time and donations, and want to thank you for your ongoing generosity that is providing critical care and support to your loved ones and neighbours who have been affected by cancer. Canadian Cancer Society staff and volunteers are very much looking forward to continuing to work with the people of Medicine Hat in the fight against all cancers.

If you or a loved one are on a cancer journey and need assistance, please do not hesitate to contact the Canadian Cancer Society for support at 1-800-661-2262 or info@cancer.ab.ca. You can also learn more about the support programs we offer and the research we fund by visiting cancer.ca.
