Pink Pumpkins for Cancer

Parker Jewell has partnered with his sons, Edwin and Irwin, in the fight against cancer. They will have something extra special available at their Country Market in York on September 21st.  Parker has spent this summer growing an exotic pumpkin, the porcelain doll pink pumpkin. He grew it with a special purpose in mind. Parker and his wife are both cancer survivors and when he heard about this unique type of pastel pink pumpkin, he knew immediately that he wanted to grow them on Prince Edward Island.  There will be a limited harvest this year and only 100 of these rare pumpkins will be available.

“There are few Island families not touched by cancer and mine is no exception,” says Parker Jewell.  “My wife and I have both experienced cancer. We have now found a way to share our passion for farming with the Society’s mission to support Islanders living with cancer. We are lucky to be here today. Growing this unique pumpkin is our way to raise funds and join others in this important fight.”

Jewell’s Country Market will have these eye-catching pumpkins available for the public Saturday, September 21st.  For every $10 donation to the Canadian Cancer Society, PEI Division customers will receive one of these beautiful pumpkins. This porcelain doll pumpkin exhibits deep ribbing with an almost square appearance and a beautiful pale pink exterior. It has deep orange, sweet flesh that can be used for all those delicious fall recipes and is sure to be beautiful as part of your holiday decorations.  Come early so you will not be disappointed as there is a limited number available.

“We love creative fundraising events like this one,” says Lori Barker, Executive Director of the Canadian Cancer Society, PEI Division. “It is always inspiring when we have a family impacted by cancer giving back in such a passionate way. Close to 900 Islanders will be told this year they have cancer. Funds raised by families like the Jewells will help to advance our mission of eradicating cancer and enhancing the quality of life for those living with the disease.”

These rare and beautiful pumpkins will be on display and available for a $10 donation at Jewell’s Country Market this Saturday between 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
