Society receives $100,000 from Avon Foundation for Women

30 January 2015

Toronto -

The Avon Foundation for Women (Canada) announced today a $100,000 gift to the Canadian Cancer Society as part of the company’s centennial anniversary celebrations. The donation makes possible the continued printing and distribution of hundreds of thousands of evidence-based breast cancer information booklets and printed materials used in hospitals, clinics and health centres across the country for the next 2 years.

“We are grateful for this support from the Avon Foundation for Women. This gift will allow us to continue our critical work in all communities by ensuring that women have access to the most credible and relevant information about breast cancer,” says Marilyn Brown, National Campaign Director, Canadian Cancer Society. “Through independent evaluation, we know that the Society’s information and support can help ease feelings of anxiety and helplessness that often accompany a cancer diagnosis,” she says.

The Society is one of 10 charities awarded a grant from the foundation to help improve the lives of those affected by breast cancer.

“We believe that patients and caregivers want and need to be informed so that they can make decisions that are best for them,” says Brown. The Society produces 80% of Canada’s cancer materials, which includes brochures that provide evidence-based information on breast cancer and many other types of cancer. In 2013 and 2014, the Society distributed nearly 350,000 breast cancer publications to regional cancer centres, community clinics and hospitals across Canada.

The Avon centennial grant will allow the Society to continue to provide Canadian women with free access to information by funding the print and distribution of bilingual breast cancer-related materials for 2 more years.
