What does the Canadian Cancer Society do?
The Canadian Cancer Society is a national community-based organization of staff and volunteers whose mission is the eradication of cancer and the enhancement of the quality of life of people living with cancer. We achieve our mission by:
- leading research to better prevent cancers
- influencing public policy for quality cancer care everywhere in Canada
- focusing support programs on the greatest needs of patients and caregivers
- engaging more Canadians in the fight against cancer
What kind of support does the Society provide for people living with cancer and their family and friends?

How does the Canadian Cancer Society raise money?
The Canadian Cancer Society is funded by donors. We are not a government organization and we rely on the public for our funding. Our revenue streams include:
- planned gifts (such as bequests in a will)
- donations made in honour of a special occasion or in memory of a loved one
- corporate partners
- fundraising activities such as Daffodil Days, Relay For Life, and independent fundraisers.
What types of research projects are funded?
As the largest charitable funder of cancer research in the country, the Canadian Cancer Society supports a wide range of promising research projects. Through our partner, the Canadian Cancer Society Research Institute, we support leading-edge projects in laboratory research, clinical trials and behavioural studies.

How is the Canadian Cancer Society organized?
The Canadian Cancer Society consists of:
- national offices in Toronto and Ottawa
- 10 provincial and territorial divisions
- approximately 220,000 volunteers (including canvassers)
- approximately 550 full-time staff
We are a community-based organization, with volunteers and staff working to fight all cancers. Local community efforts are coordinated through divisional offices across the country.
Each province is a division of the Canadian Cancer Society with a volunteer Board of Directors chaired by a divisional chair. The Alberta/NWT Division is divided into eight regional offices.
