Do your part and help us raise money for the most promising research in Canada. Did you know that people in Sault Ste. Marie have participated in clinical trials based on research that’s coming from Kingston Ontario? The Canadian Cancer Society funds the most promising cancer research to make the biggest impact for those diagnosed with cancer.  Some of the ways that Sault Ste. Marie can make an impact in our community and support lifesaving research as well as local support programs and services are:

    • Become a Cancer Fighter and host an Independent Fundraising Event. Learn more here cancer.ca/fundraise.
    • April: Make a difference at your place of employment this April (cancer awareness month) and host a dress down day, wear yellow all day, take a daffodil pin box (donation box), have a bake sale in your office, a BBQ or other fundraiser all in the name of funding cancer research.
    • Make a donation in honour of somebody that has been touched by cancer.
    • Join Relay For Life, June 16th, 2017. This amazing six hour event is devoted to those who have been touched by cancer. Buy a luminary and experience the emotional ceremony that remembers and honours those who have lost their battle with cancer and for those who are still fighting. Join us as we celebrate our survivors and cheer them on during their victory lap. This emotional, fun and inspiring evening is for individuals and teams to walk the track in the name of raising funds for Cancer research. To learn more or to register visit www.relayforlife.ca/saultstemarie.
    • Mudmoiselle (Formerly The Muddy Moose Charge): Get Down and Dirty at Searchmont Resort as a Mudmoiselle or a Mudmoiseur and join us in our 5KM mud run with proceeds going to the most promising pediatric cancer research. BRING THE KIDS for our Lil Mudders 1Km Mud Run too. Website to follow. • Volunteer opportunities
Volunteer in Algoma and support Canadians living with cancer.

We offer a flexible range of ways to become involved, no matter how much time you have or the skills you are looking to share. Our volunteer opportunities include fundraising activities, health promotion, advocating for prevention and public issues, supporting people with cancer, transporting clients to their cancer related appointments, office support and leadership roles.

We are always in need of volunteers and are currently looking for volunteer drivers for our Wheels of Hope Transportation program. Volunteer drivers offer friendly support and kindness at a time when it is needed the most. As a volunteer driver you'll pick up clients from their homes and help them along their journey to their cancer related appointments. You will have the opportunity to make a difference in someone's life, share your experiences and learn new skills. Mileage reimbursement is provided.

We are currently recruiting volunteers for Daffodil Pins Sales April 6-9, 2017 at various locations throughout Sault Ste Marie. These are two hour shifts you can do with a friend or family member, please visit vhub.at/Algoma to view the full schedule and sign up for a shift!

We are also looking for Advocacy and Prevention volunteers. Create awareness of key cancer advocacy and prevention messages through public education methods such as displays and presentations. Help to set priorities based on community needs and opportunities related to cancer prevention, healthy lifestyles and healthy environments.

For information on volunteer opportunities or to volunteer with the Algoma community office, please contact Carly Brown, Volunteer Engagement Coordinator, at cbrown@ontario.cancer.ca or call 705-253-4781 ext. 3725
