Chlorinated water

Our perspective

Adding chlorine to water makes it suitable for drinking. The amount of organic matter in the water and the amount of chlorine used to purify the water can create harmful byproducts. The Canadian Cancer Society is concerned about a link to cancer in areas where chlorine by-product levels are high.

We recommend that the amount of organic matter in the water and the amount of chlorine used to purify water are as low as possible while still ensuring the water is safe to drink.
